- Identifies primary areas for cost reduction activities and evaluates whether a specific technology is the optimal solution based on production volume and geographic location.
Senior Profile:
- Conducts cost analyses for complex components and systems.
- Identifies opportunities for cost reduction and proposes ideas based on process or product design changes.
- Evaluates technologies to determine the best fit according to production volume and geographic considerations.
- Develops and manages a roadmap for cost reduction and profit improvement initiatives. Plans, designs, and monitors the progress of cost reduction sprints.
- Builds relationships with key stakeholders and fosters idea generation through benchmarking.
Educational Background:
1. Process Engineering
A degree or significant coursework in Process Engineering is highly valued, especially if it emphasizes manufacturing techniques, workflow optimization, and materials transformation processes. Experience with Lean Manufacturing principles, Six Sigma methodologies, or similar process improvement tools is a plus.
2. Degree in Mechanical Engineering
The ideal candidate holds a bachelor's or master’s degree in Mechanical engineering from a recognized institution. This education should provide a strong foundation in mechanical systems, material science, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and structural analysis.
3. Significant Expertise as a Mechanical Specialist
Candidates without formal degrees may be considered if they demonstrate
substantial experience (typically 5+ years) in mechanical engineering or related roles. This includes hands-on experience with mechanical systems, manufacturing processes, troubleshooting, and quality control in an industrial setting.
Required Knowledge:
1. Primary Transformation Processes:
Casting, forging, sintering, stamping, injection molding, etc. :
The candidate must understand the principles, equipment, and variables affecting these manufacturing processes. They should be capable of assessing the suitability of each process for specific materials and product requirements, including cost and efficiency considerations. Experience working with suppliers or manufacturing facilities specializing in these processes is preferred.
2. Machining Processes:
Milling, turning, grinding, drilling, etc. :
The candidate should have in-depth knowledge of various machining
techniques, tools, and equipment. They must understand how to select appropriate processes based on material properties, desired tolerances, and surface finishes. Familiarity with CNC programming or operations is advantageous.
3. Heat Treatments:
Quenching and tempering, annealing, case hardening, nitriding, etc. :
The role requires expertise in the selection and application of heat treatment methods to achieve desired mechanical properties like hardness, tensile strength, and ductility. Candidates should understand the effect of these treatments on microstructures and overall material performance.
4. Mechanical Drawing:
Assessing machining operations according to specified surface finish and tolerances:
The candidate must have strong skills in reading and interpreting technical drawings, including GDCT (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing). They should be able to evaluate drawings to determine machining feasibility, tool requirements, and potential manufacturing challenges.
5. CAD Software:
Examining 3D models and extracting essential information (volume, weight, thickness, etc. ):
Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, CATIA, AutoCAD, or similar tools is required. The candidate should be adept at analyzing 3D models, performing basic measurements, and extracting key data to assist in material selection, cost estimation, and process planning. Familiarity with PLM systems is a bonus.
